Getting married at the Cathedral

Welcome and congratulations on your engagement.  We wish you both every joy and happiness as you prepare and enter into marriage.

We believe God instituted marriage for His purposes and for our good.  It is a great gift of God to men and women and we hope that you will come to experience how good it can be.

It is our desire to be as helpful as possible and to ensure your wedding day is both meaningful and happy.

Commonly asked Questions regarding marriage at St Andrew's:

What days of the week could I have my Wedding at St Andrew's?

We conduct weddings on Saturdays only.  Travel into the city is often difficult and it is hard to allow for traffic problems and other activities in the central business district.  Therefore we limit the number of weddings we conduct on any given Saturday to two so as to ensure all involved have ample time to enjoy the occasion.

Can I use my own Marriage Service?

We are an Anglican Church and use the Marriage service from An Australian Prayer Book (1978).  Minor variations are possible but only in consultation with the Minister from St Andrew’s conducting the marriage.

Here is a Sample Order of Service that might help you with your planning.

Here is a list of Suggested Music for Weddings which you may find helpful for your planning.

Can anyone get married at St Andrew’s?

We love holding weddings at St Andrew’s, but we run a Christian Wedding ceremony.  We ask that at least one of the people being married has been baptised as an Anglican, and are Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

What would I do if I wanted to be married at St Andrew’s?

  1. Contact our office for a copy of A Guide to being married at St Andrew’s Cathedral to read if you are unable to download it.
  2. Consider joining and attending one of our Cathedral Congregations.
  3. Through our office arrange to meet with a Minister from the Cathedral for a Pre-Marriage Consultation (and to book the wedding date).
  4. Expect to meet with that Minister on several occasions to prepare wedding documents, do some Christian Marriage counselling, talk through the wedding ceremony and discuss the Christian faith in relation to marriage.
  5. Attend a ‘Pre-Marriage Preparation Course’.
  6. Expect to hold a wedding rehearsal the Thursday night prior to the wedding day, from 6.30-7.30pm in the Cathedral.
  7. Get Married!

What costs are involved?

For 2012 the basic cost of a wedding service at The Cathedral is $2,400.  This includes the use of the Cathedral, the minister and the preparation, the organist (or use of the organ with approval), the flowers and a DVD recording of the ceremony.  For an additional cost, we are also able to provide the Cathedral choristers (by arrangement), bells, extended use of the Cathedral for refreshments and extra flowers.  We ask that any booking is confirmed with a non-refundable deposit of $200.

How much notice do I need to give?

We require at least three months notice of an intended wedding before we will book the ceremony.  Bookings of course are subject to the Cathedral being available.  Please feel free to make further enquiries through Reception on 9265 1661.

Wishing you every blessing in all your wedding plans.

Yours in Christ,

St Andrew's Cathedral Ministry Team
